King George VI Chase

December 26th

  • The William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton Park is one of the most prestigious chase events of the year, surpassed only by the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Traditionally taking place on Boxing Day (althought last year's appalling weather put paid to that), it is a great day out after all the festive over-indulgence.

Not that you need be at all restrained at this event. Kempton Park Race Course has much to offer on the wining and dining front, from food stalls and bars to sumptuous restaurants with stunning views of the course.

The three mile race was first run in 1937 to commemorate the ascension of King George VI.

  • It is a Grade 1 National Hunt adrenalin-fuelled chase, open to horses aged four years and over, and has eighteen fences to be jumped.

Many great horses have won, with the honour roll including the legendary Desert Orchid, Arkle, Wayward Lad and Best Mate.

Last year, Kauto Star was expected to make history by winning for the fifth year in a row but was defeated by Long Run and Riverside Theatre after getting an infection.

As with most horse racing events, one of the main draws is being able to have a little flutter.

  • Go for the atmosphere, the excitement of the racing, or simply for the chance to sip champagne with your friends.
