THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP
May 4th
Sleep is often underrated in the 24-hour society we live in. Veuve Clicquot hopes to change that. It has commissioned Mathieu Lehanneur to design the ultimate bed for the visitors of its luxury bolthole the Hotel du Marc.
Lehanneur’s sleep capsule, called Once Upon a Dream, will allow its lucky guests to recover as quickly as possible from late night partying and jet lag.
The capsule is designed to give the user the best environment for a peaceful night’s rest. Once inside, a curtain closes around you and the light is gradually dimmed until it is completely dark. The temperature is reduced 19 degrees centigrade.

White noise isolates the sleeper from any outside interference and gentle blasts of sea air are pumped in at regular intervals.
According to sleep experts, getting the right amount of shut-eye is essential. Without it our capacity for concentration and general physical wellbeing is severely impaired. It can even lead to depression, cardio-vascular disease and obesity.

Some little known facts about sleep:
• A single 30-minute nap between 1pm and 3pm can be very good for your health. Bring on the siestas!
• There are genetic differences between people who claim to prefer the night or the morning. You will find many more night owls in Barcelona than in Copenhagen.
• Wakefulness depends on the stage of sleep we were in when awoken. Whereas it is easy to wake during rapid-eye movement sleep, it is more of a problem during the non-rapid eye movement stage.
